September Tip

Sept

September is a month away from the start of cooler weather and the month that all of a sudden there are a lot of weeds in the lawn. All of the pre emergent applied earlier have worn off and the weeds are coming on strong. Resist the temptation to treat for weeds this month it is still too hot, next month should be cool enough to treat. Most of the turf damaging insects have run their course and or you have killed them so they shouldn’t be too much of an issue, but still keep an eye out for them. If we had a lot of rain in Aug be careful about any fungus that may be lurking and ready to bloom.  Make sure you keep your watering under control and don’t overwater.

For those of you doing it yourself keep an eye out for the stagler chinch bugs that made it through and Do Not use the weed and feed yet. Weed and fed for St. Augustine mostly contain atrazine and that will kill your yard if it is too hot. Weed and Feed for Bahia should be done in the spring.  Just like in Aug you may be under fertilizer restrictions and should only use fertilizer that is allowed. If you do fertilize use extra Potassium for the roots and Iron for color.

Tip If you can’t wait try a product called Celious from Bayer it takes some time to work and doesn’t kill all the weeds but it is worth it.
